Intersecting Life and Faith

Twenty-three years ago today we were living in Kansas where Rob was shepherding his first flock. We had guests for dinner(supper in the midwest) and I was in labor with our first daughter.

The previous nine months had not been uneventful as we were in a head on collision when I was five months along. I remember that Sunday afternoon vividly as I was pryed out of the car with the Jaws of Life wondering if our unborn child would survive. We would wait four long months, waiting on God, leaning hard on Jesus…He knew what was best. The Christmas season was in full swing…

…but Christmas 1988 was more than baking cookies, buying gifts and singing Christmas carols. God brought me to the foot of the cross every single day as I trusted He would be enough…for whatever December 9 would bring.

Dinner guests arrived while I was in labor. I had already been sent home by my doctor who said it could be a couple of days before our daughter would be born. It was only two hours later when we told our guests it was time for us to head to the hospital.

Four hours later Hannah Marie was born…with the cord wrapped tightly around her neck. Quick hands of a very experienced doctor unwrapped the cord…she was a healthy beautiful baby as we welcomed her into the world. Tears still come today as I thank God for the precious gift of our first daughter…2 more would follow giving our son three sisters.

Had the story been any different I know today God would have been enough…because that Christmas God’s present to me was Himself in a fresh new way while I waited for the gift of a new life.

Happy Birthday Hannah.

What a wonderful story of God’s intervention and mercy! He is the LORD of all flesh and the source all of life and breath!
