What does God’s Word have to do with it?

Why Should I Pray?

My post, Do Not Disturb, not only generated some great comments from you, but reading through the post several times, gave me thoughts for continuing the discussion. One question I have had in the past is not how to pray but why should I pray? Just Googling 'books on Christian prayer', there were bout 37,000,000 results. There are many books, articles and blog posts you could read for the answer as to why we pray. I don't have all the answers, but I would like to share briefly why and how I pray. What is prayer? I like the simple definition found at Dictionary.com, which says prayer is entering into spiritual communion with God. God Who called everything and everyone into being by just saying it, wants to be in communion with me. God Almighty wants little 'ole me to talk to Him. I want to know the God of the Bible who loves me so much He made a way for me to be in relationship with Him, through Jesus Christ, and this is possible by prayer. The goal of prayer is not only to ask, but to worship and adore He Who gives me my every breath and a new day.
Devote yourselves to prayer...Colossians 4:2
  • Scripture encourages us to be constant in prayer.
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer. Romans 12:12
We have also been given a model to pray, often called the Lord's Prayer, but more of an example to follow. Our Father who art in Heaven--is He your Father? Is God your Friend through a saving relationship with Jesus? Hallowed by Your Name--I acknowledge God is the Only One Who is Holy and there is no other Name upon which we can call to be saved. Your Kingdom come--do I want God's Kingdom to come? Or do I want Jody's kingdom to come everyday? Do I want to be a part of God's Kingdom? Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven-Will I bend my will to God's will or will I continue to insist on my own way, my own rights? Give me this day my daily bread--In praying this I surrender to the fact I will not worry about tomorrow, and trusting God will provide for everything I need for today. Forgive my trespasses as I forgive those who trespass against me. Not only am I sinned against, I'm a sinner too. Will I extend the same forgiveness God has given me to someone who has hurt me? Lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from the evil one. I need to know what my weaknesses are, recognize what I am tempted by and where the temptation comes from and flee, run from evil, don't keep it company. For Thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen

Do Not Disturb

I have come to love and appreciate this  half-moon icon the red arrow is pointing to. Maybe love is somewhat strong word, but for peace of mind in a hectic schedule I turn to this half-moon for rest. I am an avid user of my smart phone, specifically an iPhone. This half-moon represents a Do Not Disturb app, which comes on automatically at night until early morning. I've recently been turning it when I go into my closet. ximg_551475d6df234.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.a8tuHHHvmx My prayer closet that is.(Matthew 6:6) It is hard to break the habit of always being available, whether it is by text, a phone call or social media slyly trying to have my undivided attention. Breaking the habit of my smart phone directing my days and not the Lord directing my steps, is a hard one to break. But, slowing down, taking the time to go to a deserted place or into a secret place is as much-needed today as it was in Jesus' day who got up early, while it was still dark and prayed. (Mark 1:35) I know the excuses reasons well why time is not set aside to commune with the lover of our souls. Seasons of motherhood, of maybe working 2 jobs, or working and kids at home, or maybe your life has slowed down a bit, and now are filled with good works for neighbors, community and church. But if the Lord of the universe needed time away from the hustle and bustle of life, how much more do we need maybe just a few minutes carved out everyday? YBH?= Yes, but how? is the question I can hear from most of you. I didn't say it is easy. But, it will include some self-denial. Whether less sleep to get up earlier, or less time on phones that scream for our attention,  or less tv, or maybe asking a spouse to watch the little ones while you hide away. I know of a young mom of 6 who literally goes into her closet and shuts the door. Reminds me of Sarah Edwards, wife of Jonathon Edwards, and mother to eleven, which came at two year intervals. History records her as throwing up her apron during the day, and when she did so, her children knew to not bother her, because she was spending time with the Lord.
  1. Determine to set aside time to read God's Word and pray, the length of time will depend on your present circumstances.
  2. Make a plan. Where, how long, what will I read?
  3. Turn off the phone. Although, I do use Evernote for my prayer requests, so Do Not Disturb does work here.
  4. Find rest for your souls and feed on His Word.
  5. Do not let guilt rob you of rest and joy if you fail to get to your closet on a regular basis. Guilt is a joy robber and an enemy of a spirit filled life. Press on, don't look back and try again the next day. (Philippians 3:12-14)
And if you are trying to call or text and I don't answer, it may just be I'm practicing what I preach and using my Do Not Disturb!

Clothes and Crumbs Will Wait

Did you know the synonyms for distraction are madness, lunacy, insanity, craziness? Don't those words describe some of our days or even weeks? Focus, a central point of attention, attraction or activity seems to lost on our culture, many of our families and family life. How can I focus on what is important? With piles of clothes lumped in a pile on the couch, dinner crumbs from a week ago that need attention, and dishes in the sink from yesterday, how do I get my footing for today?  Add to those distractions of  work and family, how is it possible to focus on God, His Word and understanding my own story in light of the big story of God creating me in His image for Himself and His Son? How do I take in the Scriptures, feeding my soul on a regular basis, when smartphones are buzzing, the TV is announcing the latest tragedy, and I'd rather be home when at work or somewhere else when I'm home and three kids are starting world war three?(Definitions and synonyms from Dictionary.com) Looking back over almost fifty-four years, there has been a foundation laid which is unchanging. Beginning in my teen years, God's Word became the footing for the future. The regular and ongoing reading and studying the Bible has been key in understanding why I'm here on this earth for a few years. What does God want for me today has become the question I want to answer for 2016 and however many more years I have. I cannot answer God's purpose for you, nor will I ramble on with my take on life. What I would like to leave you with is the encouragement to press on today in your pursuit of knowing God. And, no I certainly do not have my act together knowing God, nor do I wear a halo. I don't have all the answers but I know the One who does. My heart, mind and soul has been tried and I have found the Lord to be enough, when life has left tread marks on my heart, the Lord has been the light in the tunnel and He.is.enough. We are all very busy with jobs, families, crumbs and clothes. But, time spent in laying down a firm foundation of getting God's Word into hearts, minds and souls will prove to be more important than any crumb waiting for me or clothes that will eventually need to be ironed. May we all "...pursue as our goal the prize promised by God's heavenly call in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:14
