But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” Acts 16:28
Paul and Silas are in prison praying and singing hymns of praise to God about midnight and the prisoners are listening to them, when suddenly the prison shakes, every door is opened and everyone’s chains are loosed. Paul and Silas’ first reaction was not to escape but to reassure the guard they were still there so he wouldn’t kill himself, and called for lights to prove they were still there.
I was quite convicted by this passage because I’m not so sure my first reaction would have been to sit still and encourage someone who was my prison guard.
Do I try to run and escape from hard circumstances or do I see those situations as an opportunity to be a witness for Christ where I’m at today?
Do I use every opportunity and times of adversity to conform me to the image of my savior Jesus?
Can I pray and sing even at midnight?
